On a side note, one of the technical accomplishments at the time was that every single transition between views in the game was fully animated. There's a surprising amount of thought put into it that isn't necessarily apparent from its superficial strangeness the physical game even came with a "strategy guide" that was chock-full of interesting making-of material. At times dark, humorous, quirky, unsettling, charming, and ominous. It's a scifi-surrealist puzzle adventure dripping with evocative atmosphere, weird creativity, and a decently interesting plot. I have no idea how you'd play it on modern hardware, but Obsidian (1997)) is a criminally underrated game in this genre. So kinda depends on you.Įdit: To clarify the Witness is a pretty long experience and can easily take up to 50 hours of gameplay time. I guess there's a story but requires you to complete the entire game like 100% which I probably will in the near future. But ya I understand the game is tiring and has no actual story like last of us or other games. I finished the game 4 days ago and I loved it. You would be surprised there are alternate endings to the game too. There are 49 audio logs, 120 environment based puzzles and 6 video logs. There are a lot of things to discover like audio logs, video clips, environmental based puzzles. Minor spoilers ahead don't go through them if you wanna play The Witness someday. Assuming that you have completed 1/4 of the game atleast there are a lot of things you may or may not have discovered. There are lot of easter eggs in the game too including one for Myst. There is no literal story but life lessons. There are a lot of things in the game which I guess you haven't experienced. There is actually a narrative in The Witness. If they could knock like 10-20% of the puzzles out, it would be much better. It's too damn long, and much like you, I got burnt out on it before I finished it. I think a story would bring that game to the next level. But my biggest complaint, by far, is the lack of a story or a narrative to tie it together. The Witness is an amazing game, it's one of my most favorites and there's a lot of really clever puzzle design in it. The Witness super-spoilers, seriously, don't read this if you want to play The Witness The Witness is very much a "It's about the journey, not the destination" kind of game, because there is no destination.īut here's some MAJOR The Witness spoilers, they will seriously ruin your enjoyment of the game: There is, but the answer is pretty unsatisfying and feels tacked on. Is there something deeper than just solving a bunch of puzzles (story, reason for why your on the island, etc)?
